Set the World on Fire – Day 5
We dedicated Wednesday to our young brother Tamir Rice. On the same day that Tamir’s parents said their final goodbyes to their son, we learned that the grand jury decided not to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo for the murder of Eric Garner.
Another police officer walks free while six children are left to spend Christmas without their father. As Esaw Garner mourns her husband, Pantaleo will freely walk the streets, be paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for interviews, and probably become a millionaire murderer.
In his last words that are caught on camera, Eric pleads with the officers to leave him alone. Pantaleo puts him into an illegal choke-hold while other officers wrestle Eric to the ground. He repeats, “I can’t breathe,” over and over.
And over again.
I can’t breathe.
Today, we honor you, brother Garner. Each breath that we inhale and exhale today, and every day, will be for you and for your justice. You can rest easy now—we will fight for you.
“The dead cannot cry out for justice. It’s the duty of them living to do so for them.” – Lois McMaster Bujold
